Judges from the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society have awarded both Non Thorne from Pembrokeshire and Rhys Griffith from Caernarfon with the opportunity to attend the Oxford Farming Conference next January.

“Five candidates came forward for interview this year and we were very impressed with the calibre of the candidates.” remarked the judges, Menna Evans and Rhys Richards.

“We were particularly impressed by the high standard set by each candidate and their personal achievements to date. Our final selection was very difficult but we were both in full agreement that the following two candidates’ enthusiasm and true appetite to attend and learn at the conference shone through.”

The Oxford Farming Conference, held annually in early January, has established a reputation for strong debate and exceptional speakers. The conference is one of the most important events of its kind bringing together farmers, politicians, scientists and others to discuss the future development of the agricultural industry. This year, the theme of  “Growing a Healthy Society” is all about strengthening the relationship between the population, the land and the people who produce the nation’s food. To qualify for the bursary candidates must be between 25 and 35 years old and working in a land-based industry.

Non and Rhys will be invited to write an article for the 2021 Royal Welsh Journal and will be presented with their bursary on Monday 25 November at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair.
