Breconshire sheep farmer Kevin Parry wins prestigious John Gittins Memorial Award - Royal Welsh

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society has played a leading role in the development of agriculture and the rural economy in Wales for over a century, since its formation in 1904.

Today our work includes providing support for business, social welfare and education in rural communities, and the organisation and staging of our ever-popular society events; the Royal Welsh Show and the Winter Fair.

SHOWGROUND

The 150 acre Royal Welsh Showground is open all year round. We host an array of exciting events set against the spectacular views of the Welsh countryside.

The Showground boasts many different venues catering for a variety of occasions such as weddings, business meetings, conferences, concerts, exhibitions and much more.

One of the most prestigious prizes in Welsh agriculture – the John Gittins Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to the Welsh sheep industry – has been awarded this year to Mr Kevin Parry, of Llwynrhydill, Breconshire.

Kevin and his wife, Delyth, farm at Llwynrhydill near Upper Chapel, Breconshire, where they run a successful sheep farm with grazing rights on the Epynt Ranges. Their flock includes Beulah Speckled Face ewes, alongside homebred Welsh Mules and Brecknock Hill Cheviots.

Outside of the farm gate, Kevin has dedicated a great deal of his time to supporting and promoting the wider Welsh sheep industry. He has served as Chairperson of the Beulah Speckled Face Sheep Society, representing and championing the breed at numerous events, including NSA open days.

Kevin also served as Chairman of the Welsh Mule Society for seven years, during which time he played a key role in promoting the breed at NSA events, the Royal Welsh Show, and across the UK. As Chair, one of his main responsibilities was to liaise with auctioneers in preparing the Society’s annual sales at Welshpool, Builth and Ruthin. Over the past 15 years, his respected role as a breed inspector at these sales has earned him a reputation as a fair and impartial mediator.

In addition, Kevin has been a member of the Farm Assurance Technical Advisory Committee for the past seven years, ensuring that the voice of the farmer is represented in governance discussions and policy decisions.

His passion for sheep breeding is evident through the many positions he has held across societies and committees, supporting both the farming community and the promotion of native breeds. His expertise has also been widely recognised through his regular involvement as a judge and steward at local agricultural shows, as well as at the Royal Welsh.

The judging panel for this year’s award comprised Mr Dafydd Parry Jones (Royal Welsh Agricultural Society), Mr Richard Thomas (Welsh Mule Sheep Breeders Association), and Ms Caryl Hughes (National Sheep Association Cymru/Wales).

The judges commented that the caliber of nominees was once again exceptional. After interviewing a shortlist of three impressive candidates, they unanimously agreed that Mr Kevin Parry was a deserving recipient of the 2025 John Gittins Memorial Award, recognising his lifelong contribution to the Welsh sheep industry.

Mr Parry will be formally presented with the award at the Opening Ceremony of the Royal Welsh Winter Fair on Monday 24th November.
